On March 25th through the 27th, native people from 37 states and 3 provinces will converge on the Denver Coliseum to celebrate their cultural heritage. One of the dances you’ll see performed is called the fancy shawl dance. Although the elaborate outfits worn are undoubtedly fancy in the way of matching beaded cape, leggings, moccasins, earrings, and barrettes, the word “fancy” refers to the dancer’s footwork. Each step taken and swirl of the shawl is part of a story.
